Ke Huy Quan Became Karl Lagerfeld at the Met Gala 2023

For starters, there’s the style of all of it. “I’m usually fairly conservative by way of my outfits,” he admits. On the awards circuit, that labored to his benefit, with Quan’s stylist Chloe Takayanagi dressing him in various traditional, strong-lined, leading-man dinner jackets. To satisfy the Met’s Karl Lagerfeld theme, although, Takayanagi labored with Dior Males creative director Kim Jones to craft a customized ensemble that’s miles outdoors Quan’s consolation zone. The look is a boldly striped grey swimsuit, complemented by a full suite of iconic Karl signifiers: an unlimited shirt collar; gleaming patent Chelsea boots; a gaggle of bijou by Fred Leighton and Kwiat; and, in fact, a pair of fingerless leather-based gloves.

The factor that’s actually received Quan on edge, although? “That is going to be the primary occasion that I’m attending alone,” he says. “Usually, my spouse is there with me.”

Later that afternoon, I stroll into Quan’s lodge room for a pre-Gala photograph shoot, and his temper has fully shifted from our earlier dialog. His hair is coiffed as much as film star perfection, his dramatic outfit is totally on, and he’s projecting a confidence commensurate with simply how rattling good-looking he seems to be. Takayanagi finishes adjusting the blinding galaxy of jewels round his neck— “These diamonds are actual? Do you’ve gotten insurance coverage on these?” he asks—and locations a really Lagerfeld-esque pair of darkish shades on his temples. Then the photographer begins capturing, and Quan goes to a different place totally. All of the sudden he is Karl Lagerfeld in all his imposing glory, mean-mugging and strutting about and clutching his lapels with ferocity. “That is the most enjoyable,” Quan says. “It seems like I’m taking part in a personality, actually. I truly checked out numerous Karl Lagerfeld poses, and this one is probably the most iconic proper right here.”
